We’ve got a couple of really tall, old Eucalyptus trees at the bottom of the property we live on, near a creek. In the past, there were a couple of red tail hawks that would roost there. I remember one time the hawks were pissed about something being up in “their” tree and kept dive bombing the intruder. I couldn’t get a good, clear glimpse of the bird they were attacking but you could tell it was significantly larger than the hawks. It would jump around from branch to branch and flap its wings, and based on the size of the wing span and how much the branches swayed each time this bird moved, you could tell it was big.
Later that day, driving down the road near my house, maybe a 1/4 mile from home, I saw a giant Golden Eagle perched on top of a road sign next to the street, just hanging out. This was about 2.5 years ago. I still see the same golen eagle every once in a while, but I haven’t witnessed it harassing my hawk family again yet.
That’s cool. I have been trying for sometime to catch a glimpse of the Bald Eagles that nest in the trees around Casitas Lake. There are some tall eucalyptus there with a number of large nests visible. Some of them are made by herons or storks, but up there somewhere is an eagle’s nest.
